Interim Evaluation

I am not at the stage where I am coming to a point of completion with the initial briefs I set at the start of the FMP module. These briefs were:

1. Rebrand the OUT campaign for a younger audience.
2.  Explore the idea of pseudoscience on the internet,
3. Create a set of zines encouraging people to be more interested in science
4. Create the packaging and promotion for a compilation of Spazz music
5. Create a proposal for the Graphic Design Yearbook.

In this time I have also extended to the following.

1. Put forward a proposal for the promotion for the Leeds College of Art End of Year Shows
2. Create the BA Fine Art Yearbook on the idea of 'Archipelago'.

Looking at the explorations I have gone through in these briefs, I feel that there have been some definate strengths in my work, I am pleased that I have been quite decisive and made progress, done experiments, research and generally put together a reasonably large body of work in the time so far, however I feel that in some respects this could have hindered the possibilities of the outcomes I have come to, had I spent more time debating the possible outcomes I could have probably come to some stronger outcomes.

I am generally very pleased with the way the projects I have undertaken have come out looking, I feel that I am starting to create a style in my work that makes things recognisable as work done be me, but also that this style is very malleable to varied and different projects. I have continued with my interest for shape, symbol and geometry with my work where I have felt it necessary and I think that this has worked well. I have also tried to work my projects over different applications, rather than just creating one object for a project I have always tried to come out with a set of pieces to display, I think every idea needs to work effortlessly over any number of applications so this is an important part of my practice.

In a weakness, I feel that some of my briefs so far have revolved around a fairly close knit theme of science and atheism. While I have enjoyed these project and they have definitely been worthwhile, I do not want all my work to revolve around these themes.

Also in my statement of intent I talked in depth about my aspirations to explore more print and finishing projects, while I have without doubt explored the possibilities of print in my projects, I don't feel like I have pushed it far enough yet.

I have decided to put together another set of briefs for me to begin as of now that will let me explore different areas, as well as pushing my print and finished outcomes further.

1. The first brief links tightly with my design contexts, and is to produce the identity and branding for a new print and finishing press, this will include the central identity as well as various applications.

2. The second brief is to design the identity and first series of T-shirts for a new fashion label, around the theme of impossibility, this is a project I have wanted to set myself for quite a while and now seems like a good time do it.

I am also think about attempting some competition briefs in short spaces of time, similarly to what I achieved with Grazia in second year, to read a brief and go with a gut instinct to produce a quick outcomes.
